It can transform your mind, even your soul, if you let it. Are you willing to find your, suit du jour, the one subject that rocks your world daily?

WELCOME TO THE ZOO | Minimum Wage

With an open mind and two sides of the story, you’re bound to learn something new. Welcome to the zoo! This is a blog where both the Republican and Democratic viewpoints are represented. The blog is not meant to sway you either way necessarily, just present both sides of the story. You may not agree with the whole article, but hey, you’re likely to agree with half!

CONSCIOUSLY LIBERAL | On Monetary Policy for the People

In conjunction with low interest rates, the cash for trash program, or quantitative easing (QE), has led to inflation in asset prices, including housing. In exchange for toxic assets and treasury bonds, QE was supposed to flood banks with cash in order to encourage lending and thus stimulate growth. In the end, most of the cash was held in bank reserves. Banks were not ready to loan out money because interest rates were low (and still are), compounded with the insecurity of high private debt and stronger credit regulation. If Fed policymakers are trying to stimulate growth, propping up asset prices at pre-crisis levels seems contrary to basic thinking.

GROSKAUFMANIS | Not Like the Other Girls

Some forms of sexism are easier to detect than others. For instance, we automatically know that when a child is told that they “throw like a girl,” he or she is being insulted. Despite the fact that none of those words alone are negatively charged, we can draw from societal context that “throwing like a girl” is bad, and, at the very least, not as good as “throwing like a boy.” This kind of sexism is pretty black-and-white: it points to misogynistic residue that exists today, with entire campaigns dedicated to combatting it. However, when sexist language directed towards females comes from females, the issue becomes more nuanced; particularly when the sexism is largely implicit. The irony of insular misogyny is both sad and abundant: girls condemning girls for being girls.

THE MCEVOY MINUTE | Trumping Trump

Over the weekend, Republican candidate Donald Trump was forced to deal with increasingly negative publicity pointed at his primary campaign, as more moderate and “establishment” Republicans grow increasingly concerned about Trump’s likely nomination as their presidential candidate. Trump’s campaign continues to snag at every turn: within the past week, his rally in Chicago was cancelled due to clashes between protesters and supporters inside the venue, and his campaign manager was accused of grabbing a reporter from conservative news site Brietbart so hard that he left bruises on her arm. Both the media and members of his party are accusing him, almost everyday, of being a liar, a racist and an instigator of violence. And yet, remarkably, Trump still won the majority of the delegates awarded in the March 15 primaries, including the 99 delegates Florida gave out in a winner-take-all style. It has become distressingly clear that Trump’s supporters are with him for the long haul and are not likely to be swayed by his aggressive, hostile or discriminatory statements and actions.

ITHACA A-LIVE | Basement Beats pt. 2

Ailis here —  Olivia couldn’t attend last weekend’s concert so I’ll be flying solo this week. Last Friday, Cayuga Lodge hosted yet another concert at their basement venue. Four talented acts played that night. The energy proliferated from an apathetic folk opener to a dance-rock closer, keeping the audience awake throughout the rather late-night show. The bands were Modern Hut of Ithaca, Benjaminto of Ithaca, Izzy True of Ithaca, and Giant Peach of NYC.

TALK IS CHIC |  There Are No Golden Rules, Only Chic Golden Mules.

GO: It’s weird when someone says to me, “That’s such a Greta outfit!” I think to myself, duh that’s why I am wearing it? But I also think, wait what is a Greta outfit? What is an Eleni outfit? ET: I agree, it’s almost disorienting. As someone who values personal style choices, it is weird to hear someone else define my look.
