GOOD TASTE ALONE | Spacebook

It’s the year 20-something-or-other. We’ve made contact with the aliens. We still call them “the aliens,” even though it’s quite possible they’re not the only aliens out there — even though we too, are space creatures, whether or not we choose to think of it that way — and even though “the aliens” has long been a conceptual colloquialism rather than a scientific label. (“Kind of like the word planet,” says Pluto.)

So, we’ve made contact with the aliens. They tried to dodge our calls.

WATCH ME IF YOU CAN | Hollywood vs. Television: A Brief History

After World War II, many things changed in American culture. There was a chain reaction, from soldiers returning home to their families, to the baby boomer generation being born. Thanks to the highway systems built in the 1950s under the Eisenhower administration, families were able to move to the suburbs in order to live more comfortably. This suburbanization became the hallmark of the post-World War II period. On weekends and workweek evenings, families with smaller children would stay home and gather around their television as the primary source of entertainment.

WELCOME TO THE ZOO | Military Spending

With an open mind and two sides of the story, you’re bound to learn something new. Welcome to the zoo! This is a blog where both the Republican and Democrat viewpoints are represented. The blog is not meant to sway you either way necessarily, just present both sides of the story. You may not agree with the whole article, but hey, you’re likely to agree with half!

POP CULTURE, POLITICS AND PERCEPTION | Unalienable Rights

While the writing paused, the world of politics and violence continued uninhibited by deadlines and winter breaks. So, what have we missed? Iran’s sanctions were lifted, Iran received new sanctions, Istanbul and Kabul suffered bombings, France is starting business in Iran, the Americas are being terrified by the Zika virus and Canada had a school shooting. So, which one of these are we going to talk about? None.

ITHACA A-LIVE | Sunday Underground

Welcome to our new blog: Ithaca A-Live. We’re Ailis Clyne and Olivia Tice, two Cornell Juniors and resident Cayuga Lodgers who love the shows in our basement and around Ithaca so much that we’ve decided to share our experiences with the whole lot of y’all. We’re also into weird facts and little-known tidbits of dinner table knowledge – see the end of this post if you like dogs (or don’t like dogs). Welcome to our musical, factoidal trip: enjoy the show! Sunday Underground: February 7th

Super Bowl?

TALK IS CHIC | Beyonce Knows She’s That Bitch When She Causes All This Conversation

Like most of you, we also attempted to watch the Super Bowl on Sunday… Who played again? Okay, we only pretended to watch the SuperBowl, while in true millennial fashion, we were on our iPhones watching and re-watching Beyonce’s new music video, “Formation.” If you have not seen it, you should either stop what you are doing right now and watch it here, or you should re-evaluate your life decisions. GO: “I’m so reckless when I rock my Givenchy dress,” is a phrase I really, really wish I could relate to more, but alas I am only reckless in a dress I probably ordered online.

MOSKOWITZ | Personal

The most visited art museum in the world is the Louvre; it amassed 9.3 million visitors in 2014. Among other European museums, such as the Orsay, Prado, British museums and even the Vatican, it is best known as a center of Western art and culture. These museums are often seen as emblems of European identity, central to defining art as a part of culture in Europe. Of course, most of these museums house art from around the world, which, especially with concerns about repatriation, becomes a complicated issue. Just a couple of days ago, Spain and Argentina agreed to give Ecuador hundreds of works from colonial and indigenous periods.

MANGA MONDAYS | Anime Romance 101: How to Harem

When you think of a harem anime, what’s the first thing that comes to your mind? I’d be willing to bet that, for most people, it’s something like Clannad (or maybe Moster Musume if you’re into that kind of thing). Of all the genres out there, I think this one is criticized more than any other. And with good reason, I might add. Harem shows tend to abuse tropes and character archetypes much more than other genres while failing to apply any interesting development to those archetypes.
